Guangyun and Jiyun: Pronounced sai.
Yangzi: Fangyan (Regional Dialects): Zai means child. In the Jiang and Xiang regions, any mention of a child is called zai.
Guangyun: Also carries the meaning of being arrogant or treating others with contempt. Another interpretation is a term used to address others.
Yupian: Pronounced zai.
Shuijing Zhu (Commentary on the Water Classic): Refers to a beautiful young boy or girl, or a young child.
Zhengzitong: The characters jian and zai are similar in pronunciation and meaning; in the Xiang and Yuan regions, all references to a child are called zai.
Note: Guangyun provides two phonetic spellings, which approximate the sound of sai. Yang Shiwei in his Zheng Yun Jian (Notes on Correct Rhymes) includes the character zai, and notes it is also pronounced sa. Sai, sa, and zai are all vernacular dialectal pronunciations. See the cross-reference under the Enclosed radical for the entry on the character jian.
