From Tangyun, Jiming, Yunhui: Zàidài cut, sound zài. Shuowen Jiezi states: One action repeated twice. The character form is a simplification of 冓 (gòu). Xu曰 (Xu Yuē) states: One statement indicating twice. Yupian states: The meaning of twice. Guangyun states: The meaning of repetition, also the meaning of once more.
"I will not repeat my words a second time." — Book of Documents (Shujing)
"Words spoken incorrectly will not be spoken a second time." — Book of Rites (Liji). The commentary states: Knowing one has made a mistake, one corrects it, thus not repeating the error.
"Once is already too much, how can there be a second time?" — Zuo Commentary (Zuozhuan)
