As defined in the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuo wen), it is a fish with red eyes.
As defined in the Approaching Elegance (Erya), in the section Explaining Fish, it is identified as a zun fish. The commentary notes it resembles a huany fish but with red eyes. The sub-commentary states that the biao fish is also known as the zun fish.
Lu Ji, in his Treatise on Trees, Plants, Insects, and Fish, notes that the zun resembles the huany fish, but its scales are finer than those of the huany, and it has red eyes.
In the Book of Odes (Shijing), in the section Odes of Bin, it is mentioned: When using the nine-paneled net for fish, one catches zun and fang fish. The commentary defines this as a large fish.
