According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is the copper base at the bottom of a weapon shaft.
In the Book of Rites (Liji), section on Inner Propriety (Quli): When presenting a dagger-axe, the bearer presents the blunt base (zun) first.
Annotation: The sharp-ended base is called zun; the term is derived from its function as a support.
Commentary: The zun is at the tail and is blunt. Turning the blunt end toward the person being honored is the proper sign of respect, which is why the blunt base is presented first and the blade is held at the rear.
