Pronounced zhou (falling tone) according to Tang Rhyme (Tangyun), Rhyme Collection (Yunhui), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), and pronounced zhou (falling tone) according to Collected Rhymes (Jiyun).
In the Explanation of Graphs and Analysis of Characters (Shuowen): The limit covered by boats and carriages. The lower covering is called yu (cosmic space), and the upper foundation is called zhou (time).
In the Huainanzi (Huainanzi): The past and the present are called zhou (time); the four directions, above and below, are called yu (cosmic space).
Also, according to the Jade Chapters (Yupian): It means to dwell. Xu Xuan states: All that the universe dwells within as it holds the ten thousand things is like a dwelling that changes and shifts without one being aware of it.
Also, rhyming with the pronunciation zhu (falling tone): In the Sima Xiangru: Park Forest Rhapsody (Shanglin fu): Pursuing strange creatures, extending through the universe (yuzhou). Bending the Fanruo (a type of bow), filling the white feathers. Feather is pronounced with a falling tone.
