According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen jiezi): To chop or whittle. Composed of the radical for axe and the character zhuo.
Annotation: Xu Xuan says: zhuo is a tool. The axe is used for chopping and whittling; some character forms are written based on the shape of the hand grasping the tool.
Book of Documents (Shujing), Timber of the Catalpa (Zicai): Since you have diligently worked to trim and chop.
Commentary: Already expended effort in refining and chopping.
Also, according to the Supplement to the Rhymes (Yunbu): Rhymes with the sound zhu.
