Xu Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Metal (jīn) Zhong Kangxi stroke count: 20 Page 1316, Entry 05 Pronounced zhong. According to the Explaining Graphs (Shuowen), it is a musical bell. According to the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) and the Records of Generations (Shi Ben), Chui created the bell. According to the Explanation of Names (Shiming), the bell is empty; because its interior is empty and holds much air, its sound is great. From the Book of Odes (Shijing), Zhou Nan section: With bells and drums to make merry. According to the Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui), these are the names of pitches: Huangzhong is the eleventh month, Jiazhong is the second month, Linzhong is the sixth month, and Yingzhong is the tenth month. Note that in the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), it is written as a variant character, as these characters were used interchangeably in antiquity. See the note on the previous entry for the character zhong for more details. Also a place name. From the Spring and Autumn Annals (Chunqiu), Duke Huan, 11th year: The Duke met the Duke of Song at Fuzhong. The commentary states: Fuzhong is a place in Cheng. Also the name of a mountain. According to the Comprehensive Geography Record (Guangyuji), Bell Mountain (Zhongshan) is located in Jinling. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), sometimes written in a variant form (zhong).
