Zheng Kangcheng's Commentary on the Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial (Yili) notes that in common usage, the character gè was referred to as gè. Note: This specific character form was added by later generations. The simple form gè and the variant gè written with the bamboo radical are considered the standard forms.
