Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), and Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui) state it is pronounced zhi; Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) state it is pronounced zhi. Often written in the variant form zhide. Zhide denotes the appearance of walking without being able to move forward.
History of the Later Han (Houhan shu), Biography of Wei Xiao: To be able to move with a few thousand soldiers, hesitating back and forth in the Sanfu region. Commentary: Zhide is like hesitating and lingering.
