Pronounced yu (rising tone).
Shuowen Jiezi explains: A stone resembling jade.
Xu Xuan adds: According to annotations in the Book of Odes (Shijing): Among jade pendants, the ju and the yu are used to be threaded between jade ornaments.
Book of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu) records: At that time, large jade pendants were crafted, consisting of chongya, double yu, and huang, all fashioned from white jade.
Notes: The Book of Odes (Shijing) states: To present one with miscellaneous jade ornaments. Mao Heng explains: Heng, huang, ju, and yu belong to the category of chongya ornaments. Yueling Zhangju states: Above the jade pendant are double heng, below are double huang, with ju and yu threaded between them, and chongya and beads used to fill the gaps. Zuanyao states: Ju and yu are used to fill gaps, positioned between jade ornaments, which are the white beads of today.
