Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen Jiezi) states it was a feudal state of the Yún clan. The Spring and Autumn Annals (Chunqiu), Year 18 of Duke Zhao, records: "The people of Zhū entered Yǔ." Commentary: The state of Yǔ is today's Kaiyang County in Langya. It is also used as a surname. Guangyun states that descendants of the rulers of the state of Yǔ took the state name as their surname, dropping the City (yì) radical and retaining the character Yu (yǔ).
