According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen): A tumor on the neck. According to the Explanation of Names (Shiming): Ying means to encircle. It encircles the throat at the neck. According to the Discourse on Nourishing Life (Yang sheng lun) by Xi Kang: The neck is an exposed place, thus it is prone to ying. According to the Record of Investigations of Things (Bowuzhi) by Zhang Hua: Those who live in the mountains often suffer from ying, caused by drinking water from stagnant springs. According to medical texts: There are five types of ying.
