Shuowen Jiezi (Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters): A tumor on the neck.
Shiming (Explanation of Names): Ying means to encircle. It is located on the neck, encircling the throat.
Ji Kang's Treatise on Nourishing Life (Yangsheng Lun): The neck is a dangerous place where a goiter may form.
Zhang Hua's Record of Broad Matters (Bowuzhi): People living in the mountains often develop goiters, caused by drinking stagnant spring water.
Medical Treatises: There are five types of goiters: flesh goiter, which does not change the color of the skin; tendon goiter, where the veins are exposed; blood goiter, where the veins are intertwined; qi goiter, which grows or shrinks depending on worry and irritation; and stone goiter, which is hard and does not move.
