Chen Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Wood (mù) Entry: 梬 Kangxi Stroke Count: 11 Page 530, Entry 16 Pronounced yǐng. In the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is defined as a type of jujube. It resembles a persimmon. In the Rhapsody on the Imperial Park (Zixu Fu) by Sima Xiangru, it is mentioned as the pear, the small jujube, and the chestnut. Zhang Yi notes that this is the small jujube. Li Shan notes that the small jujube resembles a persimmon but is smaller, and its name is the small jujube. In the Rhapsody on the Imperial Park (Shanglin Fu), it is listed as the small jujube and the waxberry. Both instances confirm that the character refers to a type of jujube. See the detailed note under the entry for the persimmon character. Additionally, according to the Classified Chapters (Leipian), it is also pronounced chěng. The meaning is the same. According to the Essential Techniques for the Welfare of the People (Qimin Yaoshu), if one has small ones, they should be planted; if not, one should take branches from the base of the jujube tree and graft them. This indicates that it is fundamentally a name for a type of jujube and is not named because it has been dried.
