Guo commentary: The fruit resembles the crabapple, is red in color, and is edible.
Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shan Hai Jing): Mount Tangting has many tan trees.
Commentary: Its other name is lian.
Also, Strange Things Record (Yiwuzhi): The zi-tan tree has a trunk reaching ten arm-spans in girth; the wood is hard and resilient, and unless sharp axes are used, it cannot be cut down, making it suitable for shipbuilding.
