According to Jiyun (Jíyùn), Yunhui (Yùnhuì), and Zhengxun (Zhèngyùn), the character is pronounced yi. It means of the same rank or generation; equal. It also refers to a corpse.
From the Book of Etiquette and Rites (Yili), in the "Scholar's Funeral Rites": The scholar's body was carried by attendants and held by men and women, placed in the hall, and covered with an yi shroud. Note: Yi (侇) means corpse. An yi shroud is a covering for a corpse and coffin.
