According to the Classified Chapters (Leipian), the yin-scale is a type of fish, appearing like seal script; another source says its head resembles a seal. In the Ode on the Capital of Wu (Wudu Fu) by Zuo Si, it is mentioned alongside turtles and other fish. The commentary states: The yin fish is three feet long, has no scales, and its body is square, resembling a seal. Local tradition in Funan states: whenever large fish are near death, the yin fish always seals them first.
