According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it describes the slight flickering of fire. Also, pronounced jian (rising tone), with the same meaning. Also, pronounced yan (falling tone). According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it describes the appearance of fire movement. In the Classic of History (Shujing), it is written: Do not let it be like a fire beginning to flicker, where its burning path continues without ceasing. In the Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), regarding the fourteenth year of Duke Zhuang, it is written: That which people fear, their energy flares up to invite it; disasters arise from people.
