According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is defined as commanding or directing. It also carries the meaning of holding or grasping.
Additionally, according to the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is the same as the word for a sigh (xu). The meaning remains the same.
