Commentary on Grasses and Trees: The spindle tree has leaves resembling those of the oak, with thick white bark; the wood within, which shows a reddish grain, is called the red spindle. It is also known as the spindle tree; its wood is tough and durable, and nowadays people use it to make the hubs of carriage wheels.
