Si Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Water (shuǐ) 泱 Kangxi Strokes: 9 Page 618, Entry 17 Tang Rhymes (Tangyun), Collection Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) state it is pronounced yang. Expository Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) defines it as weng, describing the appearance of rising clouds. It also denotes yangyang, the appearance of water that is deep and vast. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), Xiaoya section, there is the line: "The water is vast and deep." It is further extended to mean grand or magnificent. In the Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), 29th Year of Duke Xiang, there is the mention: "A grand and vast wind." According to Collection Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced yang, with the same meaning as above. According to Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), it is pronounced yang; according to Collection Rhymes (Jiyun) and Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui), it is pronounced yang; and according to Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is pronounced yang, sounding the same as yang (variant form: yang). According to Collection Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced ying, describing the appearance of clouds densely gathered. In Pan Yue's Oration on Pheasant Shooting (Shezhi Fu), there is the line: "The heavens are dense and heavy, hanging with clouds."
