Identical to the character for swallow (yàn).
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to a bird with a small mouth and wings spread, with a tail like a branching twig; it is a pictographic character, also written in a variant form. It also refers to yàn zhuó, a type of wrestling performance.
In the Western Capital Rhapsody (Xijing Fu) by Zhang Heng: Rushing through narrow paths, performing the swallow dip, thrusting the chest forward to meet sharp blades.
Note: The swallow dip refers to placing a basin of water in front of a performer, who sits behind it, then leaps forward with outstretched arms, striking the ground rhythmically with their feet, crossing over the water, and returning to a seated position, mimicking the movements of a swallow bathing at the water's edge.
According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), this is a common variant of the character for swallow (yàn).
