According to the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), in the annals of Emperor Wen, sacrificial officials offered prayers for blessings (li). The commentary by Shigu notes that li was originally written as xi, and used as a loan character. Also, in the Biography of Jia Yi, it is written that the Emperor received blessings (li) in the Xuan room. The commentary notes that this refers to receiving the blessings of the spirits. It is also interchangeable with the character meaning bright or prosperous (xi). According to the Book of Han (Hanshu), in the treatise on ritual and music, the prosperous (xi) rites were fully completed. The commentary by Shigu notes that xi is identical to xi.
