Tang Rhymes (Tangyun) and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) state the pronunciation is xu (rising tone). Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and Rhyme Collection (Yunhui) state the pronunciation is xu (rising tone). It is read like the upper tone of xu.
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen) defines it as to know. Guangya defines it as wise. Yupian states it refers to talent and wisdom. In Discourse on the Fall of Wu (Bianwanglun) by Lu Ji, it says: Schemes without omissions in wisdom, actions without strategic errors. The commentary notes that xu means wisdom and strategy.
Additionally, Correct Character Guide (Zhengzitong) defines it as deceitful. The Huainanzi (Huainanzi) states: Colluding with factions, setting up deceitful plots, harboring crafty and cunning intentions, and thus the original nature is lost.
Furthermore, Guang Rhymes (Guangyun) states it is the same as the character xu. In the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), it mentions twelve xu. The commentary states that xu is pronounced like xu, meaning those who possess talent and wisdom serve as leaders of ten.
Additionally, Guang Rhymes (Guangyun) states the pronunciation is xu (level tone). Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Collection (Yunhui), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) state the pronunciation is xu (level tone). The meaning is the same.
Character Compendium Supplement (Zihuibu) notes that it is incorrectly written as a different form, which is not correct. The original character is composed of the speech radical on the left, with the right side consisting of the character for bar above the character for yue.
