Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): A small basin. Derived from metal, with yuan acting as the phonetic. Another definition states it is a tripod without feet.
Wuyin Jiyun: A copper cooking vessel.
Guangya: The items known as qiao, ge, and zong are collectively called yao.

Hanshu (Book of Han), Song of the Suburban Sacrifices: Displaying poetry to match the rhythm, the jade xuan rings out.
Commentary: Jin Zhuo says: Xuan is the sound of ringing jade. Yan Shigu says: Xuan is pronounced xuan.
