In the Chu region, people address an elder sister as xu. As mentioned in the Encountering Sorrow (Lisao) by Qu Yuan: "My sister Xu was gentle and kind." The commentary notes that Nüxu refers to the elder sister of Qu Yuan. Also, Lü Xu was the younger sister of Empress Lü of the Han dynasty and the wife of Fan Kuai, who was enfeoffed as the Marquis of Linguang.
