Formed from the radical Sound, with the phonetic element xiāng. Commentary by Xu Kai: That which is external to a sound is called an echo (xiǎng). An echo is like a phantom; it is fleeting. That which is substantial and refined is called sound, while that which is coarse and fleeting is called an echo. The way an echo attaches to a sound is like a shadow attaching to a form. Yupian: The response to a sound. Book of Documents (Shujing), Counsels of the Great Yu: Only an echo responds. Also refers to fāngxiǎng, a musical instrument. Duyang Zabian: In the ninth year of the Taihe era, the palace maid Shen Aqiao presented a white jade fāngxiǎng. Jiyun: Sometimes written in a variant form. Yunhui: Also written as xiāng.
