Book of Documents (Shijing): Birds and beasts have groomed fur.
Kong Commentary: Groomed means to arrange. It refers to the fur growing back and being ordered.
Correct Meaning (Zhengyi): The appearance of beautiful, pleasing plumage. In the summer, plumage is sparse, but now the plumage has regrown and been ordered, hence it is called regrown and ordered.
Explaining Graphs (Shuowen): In mid-autumn, the fur and plumage of birds and beasts are abundant and can be selected for use as implements. Pronounced xuan. Bao states: After the frost, select the fur. This is the same meaning as found in Explaining Graphs (Shuowen).
