Tang Rhymes (Tangyun): Pronounced rang. Collected Rhymes (Jiyun): Pronounced rang. In Explanation of Scripts (Shuowen), written as the character for mold. It means the middle of the intestines. In Correct Character Mastery (Zhengzitong), some say a mold is a method for casting vessels. When making a mold, one first uses rope to create a core; once the mold is set, one pulls the rope from the opening, and when the rope is extracted, the mold remains, which resembles an intestine. Also, in Extensive Rhymes (Guangyun), hook-xiang is a weapon. In Explanations of Names (Shiming), it is stated that a hook-xiang has hooks at both ends and a central part called xiang.
