Pronounced xiu (falling tone).
Equivalent to the character xiu (with nose as radical), meaning to bring the nose close to a scent.
To inhale an odor with the nose.
In the Analects (Lunyu), it is written: He sniffed it three times and then rose.
In the Zhuangzi, section The Human World (Renjianshi), it is written: To smell it is to become crazed, with an intoxication that lasts for three days and does not cease.
Also written in the variant form chou.
Additionally, pronounced zhong (falling tone). The meaning is the same.
Textual Research:
In the Zhuangzi, section Free and Easy Wandering (Xiaoyaoyou), it is written: To smell it is to become crazed, remaining intoxicated for three days and not ceasing. We note that the section Free and Easy Wandering does not contain this text; we have corrected it to read The Human World (Renjianshi) according to the original text, and changed the word for awake to the word for intoxicated (cheng).
