According to the Tang Rhyme (Tangyun) and the Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is qiǎn (rising tone). The Shuowen Jiezi defines it as a type of animal. According to the Guangyun, the pronunciation is tiǎn (falling rising tone); the Jiyun and the Rhyme Collection (Yunhui) also give the pronunciation as tiǎn (falling rising tone), which is the same as the character for that sound. The Yupian dictionary defines it as a field mouse. The Erya: Interpretation of Beasts (Erya: Shishou) records it as the xian mouse. The commentary states that this mouse uses its cheeks to store food. The Interpretation of Names (Shiming) notes that it is related to the jaw; some people call it the xian vehicle because the mouse stores food in its cheeks, and since a person eating is similar in appearance, it was named accordingly.
Textual research: In the Erya: Interpretation of Beasts, it is listed as the xian mouse. The commentary states that it uses its cheeks to store food. Following the original text, the reference to the cheeks has been amended to reflect that it wraps food in its cheeks.
