Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), and Rhyme Meeting (Yunhui) define the pronunciation as xie.
Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) states it means to bind. Sometimes written in a variant form (xie) using the component for leaf.
Jade Chapter (Yupian) defines it as a horse rein. In general, any rope used to tether oxen or horses is called xie.
Also, Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Yong states: Covering oneself in fine, creped hempen cloth to be cool and refreshed. The commentary notes that cool and refreshed refers to removing heat.
Also, Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Winter Officers, Artificer's Record (Kaogongji), Bow Maker section states: If the horn is consistent and reaches through, but it is like a final binding, it is not a benefit to the bow. The commentary notes that xie refers to the bow itself.
Also, History of the Former Han (Qianshu), Biography of Yang Xiong states: Truly observe the leaping movement of the prey. The commentary by Yan Shigu says that xie is the same as yi.
