Wu Collection, Lower Volume Radical: Grain (hé) Kangxi Strokes: 19 Page 861, Entry 06 Pronounced wen (rising tone). Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen) states: To trample grain in order to gather it together. Another explanation is that it means stable or settled. The character structure is derived from the radical for grain and is an abbreviated form of the character hidden (yǐn). In ancient times, it was commonly used interchangeably with the term for tranquil and hidden (ān yǐn). Also, according to the Zihui Bu (Supplement to the Collection of Characters), it rhymes with the pronunciation yan (rising tone). From the poem Chuiyunting by Su Shi: Though the rivers and mountains have much to offer, the pavilions find it hard to be stable. One ascends but fails to grasp the essence, while all things appear steep and towering.
