The Tangyun (Tángyùn) and Zhengyun (Zhèngyùn) give the fanqie pronunciation "an gu qie". The Jiyun (Jíyùn) gives "yu wu qie". It shares the same pronunciation as *wū*. The Shuowen Jiezi (Shuōwén Jiězì) explains it as a small screen or barrier. The Tangyun defines it as a village screen or barrier. It is synonymous with *wù*. Also, the Shuowen Jiezi offers another explanation: a low city wall. The Guangyun (Guǎngyùn) defines it as defensive fortifications. The Records of the Later Han (Hòuhànshū), Biography of Dong Zhuo, records: Dong Zhuo constructed the Wansui Wu, where he hoarded gold, silver, and grain as a thirty-year reserve. Also, the Jiyun notes the pronunciation "wu gu qie", which is the same as *è*. It means a screen or barrier. Sometimes also written as *yà*.
