Pronounced wu.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means to not follow. It is also the name of a star, the location of the astronomical station known as the Void. In the Classic of Stars (Xingjing), the four stars of the Girl constellation are also called the Maiden star. See the note under the Woman radical for further details. In the Biography of Gu Yong in the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), it refers to an eclipse occurring in the sector of the Maiden star. In Zuo Si's Rhapsody on the Capital of Wu (Wu Du Fu), it is written that the Maiden star occupies its territory. It is also the name of a prefecture; during the Sui and Tang dynasties, Wu Prefecture was established. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is also pronounced mou, meaning beautiful appearance. It is also pronounced mu, with the same meaning.
