Xu Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Gate (mén) Wen Kangxi stroke count: 17 Page 1338, Entry 16 Guangyun (Broad Rhymes) and Yunhui (Collection of Rhymes) state the pronunciation is wen. Shuowen Jiezi (Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters) defines it as: to look down at something. Guangyun (Broad Rhymes) states the common variant is written as wen. Yunhui (Collection of Rhymes) records it as a place name. In Hongnong, there is a location called Wenting. Also, Guangyun (Broad Rhymes) states the pronunciation is bin. The meaning is the same. Also, in the Biography of the Five Sons of Emperor Wu from the Book of Han (Qian Han Shu), the name Wenxiang appears. Commentary: Meng Kang states: Wen is the ancient form of the character for hear (wen). The character structure consists of Gate and an internal component. During the Jian'an era, it was changed to the character for hear (wen). Note: Regarding the character wen, Shuowen Jiezi (Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters) defines it as looking down, which is different from the meaning of hearing. It is unclear why the commentary in the Book of Han (Han Shu) provides this interpretation; it is recorded here for future investigation.
