According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), pronounced wei. According to the Five Tones Collected Rhymes (Wuyin Jiyun), pronounced wei. Identical to the character meaning foolish speech. As seen in the Analysis of Circumstances (Xingshijie) section of the Book of Master Guan (Guanzi): To praise an unworthy person is called wei. Furthermore, the Standard Character Guide (Zhengzitong) states it means to deceive. It is interchangeable with the character for false (wei). It is also written in a variant form (wei). As seen in the Zuo Commentary (Zuozhuan), twenty-fourth year of Duke Ai: This is false speech. Commentary: This means words that are not trustworthy.
