Yupian (Jade Chapters) defines it as bright, also referring to a flourishing appearance. Guangyun (Broad Rhymes) defines it as brilliant and fresh in color. Book of Odes (Shijing), Beifeng section, contains the phrase: "The red tube is brilliant." The Commentary states: "Wei, the appearance of being red." Also, according to Jiyun (Collected Rhymes), it has the pronunciation hui (level tone), which sounds like "hui." Originally written as the variant form hui.
