Pronounced wei (falling tone)
Shuowen Jiezi (Explaining Single-component Characters and Analyzing Compound Characters) defines it as a magnificent red color.
Yupian (Jade Chapters) defines it as bright, also referring to a flourishing appearance.
Guangyun (Broad Rhymes) defines it as brilliant and fresh in color.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Beifeng section, contains the phrase: "The red tube is brilliant."
The Commentary states: "Wei, the appearance of being red."
Also, according to Jiyun (Collected Rhymes), it has the pronunciation hui (level tone), which sounds like "hui." Originally written as the variant form hui. See the entry for the character hui for a detailed explanation.
Book of Han (Hanshu), Biography of Wang Mang, contains the phrase: "The green light ascended peacefully."
Annotation: Fu Qian says: Wei is pronounced the same as hui. Ru Chun says: It refers to the radiance of green light.
