Pronounced wei (rising tone). Name of a river. According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), the river originates in Yangcheng Mountain, Yingchuan, and flows southeast into the Ying River. Also the name of a river originating in Gaonu County, Shang Commandery. The Commentary on the Classic of Waterways (Shuijing Zhu) states that the Clear Water flows east, passing Gaonu County, and joins the Fenglin River. The Book of Han (Qianhan): Geography Treatise refers to it as the Wei River. Also, Weipan, the name of a river originating at Yanzhi Mountain. Qu Yuan in his Encountering Sorrow (Lisao) writes, In the morning I washed my hair in the Weipan. Also, Quwei, a place in the state of Zheng, see the Commentary on the Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan Zhu).
