According to the Tang Dynasty Rhymes (Tangyun), the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), and the Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui), the pronunciation is the same as tong.
According to the Explanation of Graphs and Analysis of Characters (Shuowen), the term tong-long refers to the appearance of the sun about to shine brightly.
Lu Ji in the Literary Composition (Wenfu) writes, "The emotions are tong-long and grow ever clearer." The commentary notes that tong-long refers to the state of being about to shine brightly.
