Pronounced tiáo. Sometimes written in the variant form (tiáo).
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen jiezi), a small branch. Xu says, that which grows from a branch. Book of Odes (Shijing): "Cut its branches and trunks." Commentary: Branches are called tiao, trunks are called mei.
Also, long. Book of Documents (Shangshu): "Its trees are tall and long."
Also, a tree name. A type of pomelo. Erya: "Pomelo is tiao." Book of Odes (Shijing): "There is the tiao, there is the mei." Piya: "The pomelo resembles the orange but is larger than the tangerine. It is also called tiao."
Also, order or organization. Book of Documents (Shangshu): "Like a net on its main rope, it is ordered and not in disarray."
Also, tiao-ran, the appearance of whistling. Book of Odes (Shijing): "In the central valley there is motherwort, whistling long and clear."
Also, to reach or spread out. Former Han History (Hanshu), Odes on Sacrifices: "The sound and essence reach far."
Also, smooth or flourishing. Former Han History (Hanshu), Treatise on Harmonics: "The yin and yang and all things are flourishing, reaching completion."
Also, teaching regulations. Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Harsh Officials: "Used to promote transformed regulations."
Also, to report in detail. Former Han History (Hanshu), Edict of Emperor Yuan: "Report the details without omitting anything."
Also, articles or rules. History of Jin (Jinshu), Biography of Liu Shi: "Compiled the Spring and Autumn Regulations in twenty volumes." Yan Shigu says: Generally, when one speaks of tiao, it means to list them one by one, like the branches of a tree.
Also, a cord or string. Book of Rites (Liji): "The mourning cap has string attachments."
Also, one of the eight winds. Yiwei tonggua yan: "The northeast is called the tiao wind."
Also, Bogya: Tiao-tiao, to be agitated or in chaos.
Also, Mingtiao, a place name located in Anyi County, Hedong Commandery.
Also, a state name. During the Han dynasty, Zhou Bo was enfeoffed as the Marquis of Tiao.
Also, a surname. Surname Garden (Xingyuan): During the Jin dynasty, there was an official named Tiao Mei.
Pronounced tiāo. To strip leaves or prune. Book of Odes (Shijing): "In the silkworm month, prune the mulberry."
Also pronounced chī. Same meaning as above.
Also interchangeable with di. Book of Rites (Zhouli), Bureau of Autumn: "The Tiaolang official." Commentary: Pronounced di.
Also rhyming with liu, read as tou. Lu Yun, Eulogy for Summer Prefect Jun: "The hundred conducts have different ways, the ruler’s expectations are thorough. Perched in the initial nine, folding wings on the great branch."
