According to the Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced diao. Meaning the appearance of being remote and deep. Also commonly written in the variant form tiao. In the Discourse on Rites (Xunzi), it says: to fill the great universe without being deep. The commentary notes that tiao is read as tiao, meaning deep appearance. In the Western Capital Rhapsody (Xijing Fu) by Zhang Heng, it says: looking at the deep and winding path. The commentary notes that it means deep and profound appearance.
