Jiyun, Yunhui, Zhengyun: Pronounced xian (rising tone).
Guangyun: Fine bamboo.
Bamboo Treatise (Zhupu) by Dai Kaizhi: The xiao bamboo grows on Zou Mountain in Lu Commandery and is suitable for making sheng (a reed pipe wind instrument).
Book of Documents (Shangshu), Tribute of Yu (Yugong): The xiao and dang bamboo were distributed.
Commentary: Xiao is a bamboo arrow shaft.
Sub-commentary: Xiao is a type of small bamboo.
Erya Sub-commentary: Xiao is also called a bamboo arrow.
Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Offices of Heaven, Grand Administrator: Using the nine categories of tribute to provide for the needs of the state, the fifth is material tribute.
Note: Material tribute includes chun, gan, gua, bai, xiao, and dang bamboo.
Bamboo Treatise (Zhupu): Islands have xiao bamboo, the largest being like chopsticks, solid inside and hard outside, which do not bend when pulled; they have few branches and leaves and appear like withered chopsticks.
Also interchangeable with xiao (flute).
Ma Rong, Rhapsody on the Long Flute (Changdi Fu): The forest xiao and creeping vitex.
Note: Xiao (flute) and xiao (bamboo) are interchangeable.
Zhengyun: In the seal script it is written as xiao. Now it is written as xiao.
