Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi): The veins and luster of jade reflecting one another, arranged like the strings of a zither (se). The Book of Odes (Shijing) says: Si is that jade libation cup. Note: In the current version of the Book of Odes, Great Elegantia (Daya), this is written as the character for zither (se).
Jade Chapter (Yupian): Refers to being pure, fresh, and clean.
Broad Rhymes (Guangyun): Describes the appearance of jade that is bright, fresh, and clean.
Dictionary of Rhymes (Yunhui): Another interpretation is si-si, referring to blue-green beads. Used interchangeably with the term for murmuring (se-se).
