Pronounced se. Same as the variant form (se). According to the Explanations of Graphs and Analysis of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means not slippery. In the chapter on Ten Opposites from the Comprehensive Account of Customs (Fengsu Tong), it mentions cold and rough (se) compared to dried snails. Also, walls layered with stones to create a water pattern are called rough waves (se lang). Wen Tingyun wrote in a poem, Rough waves float against the jade steps. Also, the name of a bamboo. In the Records of Plants and Trees of the Guangxi Region (Guihai Caomu Zhi) by Fan Chengda, it states that rough bamboo (se zhu) has skin as coarse and abrasive as sandpaper. In the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is also written as a variant form. The original character was written with the radical for blade (ren) below which is the radical for stop (zhi).
