In the Explaining Graphs and Analysis of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is formed from the radical for dog and the phonetic element jun. In the Er Ya (Erya), it is stated that the suanni (a lion-like creature) resembles a small tiger and feeds on tigers and leopards. The commentary notes that it is the lion, originating from the Western Regions. The Record of the Son of Heaven (Tianzi Zhuan) mentions the suanni and the wild horse, which can travel five hundred li. In the Guang Yun (Guangyun), it is sometimes written in a variant form. In the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is sometimes written in a variant form.
