Ancient form. According to the Extensive Dictionary of Sounds and Meanings (Guangyun), the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), and the Collection of Rhymes (Yunhui), the pronunciation is shen (falling tone).
To open the eyes wide and look. Also refers to leading the eyes to gaze into the distance.
According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), the appearance of speed. In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), specifically the Rhapsody on Sir Fantasy (Zixu Fu) by Sima Xiangru: "Sudden and swift, cold and piercing." The annotation by Zhang Yi states that both terms describe speed.
According to the Extensive Dictionary of Sounds and Meanings (Guangyun), the appearance of birds and beasts being startled. In the Rhapsody on the Capital of Shu (Shu Du Fu) by Zuo Si: "Hawks and hounds, sudden and swift." The annotation by Li Shan states that shen means startled or disturbed.
According to the Extensive Dictionary of Sounds and Meanings (Guangyun) and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is shen. The meaning is the same. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is sometimes written in a variant form (chen).
