Pronounced shen. According to the Tang Rhymes (Tangyun) and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced shen. Defined in the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) as to scoop something from above downward. The Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) defines it as selecting and taking items from above. Additionally, the Erudite Elegant (Boya) records that pou shen means to decrease. The Classic of the Mysterious Principal (Yuanbao Jing) records: to lose and to pare away. The commentary states: shen and lie mean to strip away or reduce.
