It signifies a group of horses eager to advance first. Also, the appearance of being numerous or many. In "Summons of the Soul" (Zhāo Hún) from Elegies of Chu (Chǔ Cí): "Wolves and jackals follow with their eyes, coming and going in vast numbers." Also a surname. In Master Lü's Spring and Autumn Annals (Lǚshì Chūnqiū), there is mention of the Shen clan. From Zihui Supplement (Zìhuì Bǔ): Also a marquisate during the Shang dynasty. According to Record of Roads (Lù Shǐ), it was among the rebellious feudal lords. Some mistakenly identify it with xin.
