Ancient script. According to the Extensive Rhymes (Guangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), and Rhyme Compilation (Yunhui), it is pronounced shun.
As stated in the Explanation of Graphs and Analysis of Characters (Shuowen), this is a type of plant. In the state of Chu it is called fu, in the state of Qin it is called qiong; it is a creeping plant with joined flowers.
Also, in the Book of Odes (Shijing), Zheng Winds section: There is a woman in the carriage, her face like the shun flower. The Commentary (Zhuan) states that shun is the hibiscus.
It is also the title of the Yu clan. In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Annals of the Five Emperors: Yu Shun, whose name is Chonghua. The Notes (Zhu) state: Yin notes that according to the laws of posthumous titles, those who are benevolent, sagely, flourishing, and enlightened are called Shun.
